HW 7: TV Stations Showing Korean TV Dramas

It's been a many years that the Philippine TV showing Korean dramas on daytime, afternoon and prime-time. And these are brought to us by the three largest stations which are the GMA Kapuso, ABS-CBN Kapamilya and TV5 Kapatid.

They are competing with each other to lunch a new and fascinating drama that the viewers will cherish and will get a high rating. GMA Kapuso started showing Korean dramas since 2003 until now.

List of Korean dramas GMA 7 aired:

As I see, they show Korean drama because since GMA 7 started to aired Dae Jang Geum, it's become click to the mass and they feel how Filipino viewers become attracted to K-dramas.
Dae Jang Geum is also known as Jewel in the Palace. The genre of this drama was Historical Fiction. It is about the tale of an orphaned kitchen cook who became the king's first female physician.

In a time when women held little influence in society, young apprentice cook Jang Geum strives to learn the secrets of Korean cooking and medicine in order to cure the King of his various ailments. This is based on the true story of Jang-Geum, the first female royal physician of the Joseon Dynasty.

It aired on Philippine TV by the said station from November 2005 until March 2006. It has the highest rated Korean drama showed in the Philippines. During April, it was returned after the show ended because of its popularity with the mass and again got higher ratings.

The Tagalog version of the theme song of this drama was sung by Faith Cuneta, which is entitled "Pangarap na Bituin".

According to the Article I've read which is entitled The Charm of Dae Jang Geum, this article discusses about, how a woman overcomes a hardship to become a high ranking member of the king's kitchen staff and, later become a doctor who helped plenty of people and chosen as the king's physician in a time when there is no model yet, responsible position for women.

While ABS-CBN started showing Koreanovelas since 2004 and they have four Korean dramas.

Here are the lists of Korean dramas showed by ABS-CBN:

Then again, when ABS-CBN aired Lovers in Paris it became hit in the mass, broke the ratings record of "Dae Jang Geum" and became the rival of GMA 7.

Lovers in Paris is a Korean drama that first aired in 2004 on SBS with actress Kim Jung-Eun in the title role, Park Shin-Yang as Carlo and Lee Dong-Gun as Martin. The series had a total of 20 episodes.

It also has a Filipino Version, it is considered the first teleserye of KC Concepcion, who played the role of Vivian Viscarra, a young woman who dreams to become a director in Paris. And this is her first team-up with the Philippine heartthrob Piolo Pascual who plays Carlo Aranaz.

The theme song entitled "Wag na Wag Mong Sasabihen" was sung by KC Concepcion used for commercial purpose and the other is a duet by KC with Piolo, used in the show

As I had read the article of Lovers in Paris - reviews, it gave me the knowledge that this show became hit to the mass and break the ratings record of Dae Jang Geum, reaching a 57% rating as its peak. But for me, Lovers in Paris still not completely get my sense of wanting a drama with a good story.

Last, but not the least, TV5 the former ABC-5 also aired some Korean dramas. It's just the beginning of it to show k-drama on their prime. That's why it only has few k-dramas showed.

The list of Asianovelas aired by TV5:
The present Korean drama that really captivates the viewers with many stories, such stories about love, betrayal and relationships.
These are the big time Korean drama aired on TV5. White Lies, Love You a Thousand Times, and Pink Lipstick.

According to the article I had read which is entitled Big Time Korean Dramas Premiere on TV5. These are the reason why the viewers around the Philippine love to watch this big time Korean drama.

  • White Lies the story of this was a very interesting one, unlike from any Korean drama before, the ending part was stunning.
  • Love You A Thousand Times tackles this story was quite fascinating, something different yet not too far unreliable.
  • In Pink Lipstick, this drama is good but I guess it puzzles the viewers because of the schemes of the characters in it and it gets so confusing on who hates and who cheats.
As you can see in the list of the shows that the three stations showed, GMA has the lot of Koreanovelas aired since 2003, next to it was ABS-CBN, and still following TV5. They still show and adapting the dramas of Korean, and making a Filipino version of it.

For me, through this three large stations we view this kind of drama. And that is why we are now influenced by their culture. Without this choice of entertainment we could not be attached to this kind of drama. But we can't blame the said station in this case, it is all what we want and what we select.

DISCUSSION

Aspects of Korean dramas do Filipinos like?

Definition and Popularity of Korean dramas

The Definition of Korean dramas, refers to televised dramas, in a miniseries format, produced in South Korea. Many of these dramas have become popular throughout Asia, with a growing choice in other parts of the world. K-dramas have contributed to the general mystery of the drama fever. Korean dramas run from 16 to over 100 episodes. Most series have episodes an hour long. One of the shorter 16 episode k-dramas might run 960 minutes. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_drama)

Zarzuela or Sarswela called in the Philippines is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between singing and speaking scenes, the final incorporating dances. It is a genre and integral part of Filipino music, it was adapted by the ancestors and suits to the Filipino taste. Zarzuela can make a good music to the Filipino.

The first Korean drama aired in the Philippines was Endless Love I: Autumn in my Heart since 2003. It was the first connection with the four  part Endless Love drama series. Korean dramas have been an inestimable part of Philippine TV shows, providing the sponsor channels with good ratings. There are about 130 Korean dramas dubbed in Filipino and aired on leading local channels. Koreanovelas, which Filipinos usually named Korean TV drama series, it has been attached to the Philippine society for the past seven years. Today, there is no time you cannot watch a Korean drama in the Philippine television. The success of this drama inspired the local network to secure more Korean dramas.

According to some lovers of K-drama, there are some elements of a Korean drama. The arrogant male lead who secretly hides a sensitive and romantic nature (usually due to something that happened in the past, or a family issue), The best friend who falls in love with the male/female lead but is destined to be nothing more than a best friend, and yet ends up being happy for their friend anyway, The old lover who comes back and tries to ruin everything but fails, Someone gets amnesia, The realistic ending where everyone is happy. (http://www.notboredny.com/2011/12/elements-of-korean-drama.html)

It did not take long for Korean dramas to become hits in the Philippines. Filipinos fell in love with Korean dramas, and that is why Filipino viewers became more investigative about Korean culture, and we are now officially hit by the “drama fever.” As for the growing addiction of many Filipino viewers to Korean drama, one of the reason is maybe because the story itself is  not too long.

And one thing is for sure that Filipino viewers don’t like about local dramas is that they always introduce too many characters and come to the point that you wouldn’t even keep in mind who were the original cast. That made us fall in love with Korean dramas.

Another reason why Filipinos are so attracted to Korean dramas is because the story is wisely manipulated thus keeping the viewers asking for more. But one thing is for sure, Korea has definitely achieved a space not just in the world of fashion and television, but also in the hearts of many Filipinos.

Factors influencing of Korean dramas to Filipino

     A.   Philippine Entertainment

Entertainment in the Philippines has greatly gained advantage by the television and cinemas. It can be noticed that every day, there are so many people attached to their TV just to get their daily happiness of entertainment. In effect, it is clear that the everyday lives of all Filipinos are influenced by TV shows and TV personalities.
Aside from that, some Filipinos entertain themselves by watching films produced both locally and Korean. Philippine TV aired Korean dramas many times, directors and producers in the Philippines do their best in order to have a unique and touching film concept that will capture the hearts of many Filipinos. That's why producers come up to the idea of having a Filipino version of Korean dramas. Korean dramas really influenced the Philippine TV to make their series popular with viewers.

     B.   Personal Experiences

Many people, or should I say many Filipino viewers have been attracted and addicted to Korean dramas after finishing watching a Korean drama. Korean drama made everyone to get hooked into it and this made Filipino viewers to have a personal meaning about Koreanovelas.

Koreanovelas changes the life of other Filipinos and other viewers around the world, it has become part of the people’s everyday life. From the Korean stuff and food delicacies, with a tongue being used for mixing Korean with native language, fingers spontaneous typing Korean websites and a stomach craving for Korean food.

     C.   Culture

Most Filipinos are really attached to Korean culture. Future projects are aimed to generate a deeper attraction among the Filipinos regarding the unknown aspects of Korean culture such as art and literature, among others.

From accessories, dramas, food and clothes – everything about Korean stuff – can be found almost everywhere in the Philippines these days. It could be in the Malls, online shops, and bazaars are now stocking up for the demand of this “culture infusion.” Most Filipinos super admire their fashion and  watch Korean dramas like crazy.

HW 4: Survey/Interview Report

For me to gather more information, I have conducted a survey. Which I randomly choose who will answer the questions I produced. Through this, I didn’t expect that even guys could answer my prepared questions.
I have surveyed around 15 respondents which only 12 persons answered it. I did this through online, I just send an email to the 15 respondents and didn’t force them whether to answer or not, it’s their choice, anyway. I only have 9 questions, which they should only take 15 minutes or less.

Out of many Korean dramas, these are the dramas Filipino viewers watched and liked the most. This process has given me an answer to my unanswered questions and what I don’t know about Korean dramas.

A hundred percent of my respondents really watch and like Korean dramas. Because they wanted an interesting, romantic, comedy and conservative story. Like what Koreanovelas was.

Just like what I’ve predicted, viewers around the world is more typically like to watch Korean dramas than Local and American dramas. Local dramas are just repeating again and again the plot of the story, and American dramas are about killing, gambling, bloody, political, and full of love scene unlike Korean dramas are conservative and interesting.

HW 1: Background of the Survey

As the term goes by and the Final is fast approaching, I have done my research paper through this blog. And this is composed of three chapters where I had recently finished the introductory part of the first chapter of my research paper which consist of a statement of the problem, significance of my study, scope and delimitation, material and method, and lastly the definition of terms.

The first chapter of my research paper contents is that most of the Filipinos are influenced by the culture of the Koreans. Most especially their dramas, that even the Philippine entertainment are adapting their way of creating a drama and their own concept.

What do you expect I know about this topic? I knew some, but I don’t know too much. I can give you little information but not a lot. I don’t do watch Koreanovelas always but I assure you I can tell about my favorite dramas, instead.

I know that Koreanovelas went go popular to our beloved country, the Philippines. Me, some of my friends, my mom, and my aunts watch Korean dramas. They prove to me that Korean dramas nowadays, got their attention and glued to their television to watch as well.

What is so funny about these Korean dramas? There is no love scene, no open mouth kissing, no profanity and no real violence. And they all have subtitles so we can understand it. Even though we Filipinos can’t understand their language, we still watch it. And ofcourse, we’ve got influenced.

I am always asking myself what are the things or information I still don’t know yet. I’m still wondering why these kind of drama got our attention and why we are fond to watch it instead of our local dramas? That’s why I’m searching and looking an answer to my unanswered questions.

Seriously speaking, I don’t know who are the people who actually know what I don’t know. But I’m looking forward to know these people so I could get some answer to my questions.

To proceed to the next chapter, I decided to produce a survey question to contribute some information about what people sensuous to Korean drama and for me to do the chapter too easy. And I'm expecting that I can get the answer I used to have. Whereby I can use it to my researches.
